Obituary For Olga (Cindy) Miller

Olga "Cindy" Miller

May 4, 1931 - March 2, 2025

Dowling Park, FL - Surrounded by her family, Olga "Cindy" Miller (nee Havas) passed away peacefully on March 2, 2025, just shy of her 94th birthday. She is survived by her children, Stephen P. Miller of Baltimore, MD and Kathryn A. (Barry) Herbst, grandchildren Emily L. Herbst and John M. Herbst of Petaluma, CA, and her adopted "spiritual" daughter, Claudia (Chris) Porciello of Bradenton, FL. Olga was pre-deceased by brother John M. Havas, and was previously married to and pre-deceased by Paul T. Miller.

Born May 4, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York to John J. and Emily (Pekurny) Havas, Olga grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey. She went to Lincoln High School, where she excelled in academics, served as editor of the yearbook, and received awards for Leadership, Character and Service. Following high school Olga received a Bachelor of Science degree with High Honors from the College of Physical Education, Recreation and Health at the University of Maryland.

In the early 1960s Olga moved to Maryland where she worked full-time for IBM and then Communications Satellite Corporation (COMSAT). Upon retiring from COMSAT in 1986, she went on to co-found the Prince of Peace Home for Girls -- a home for abused, abandoned and neglected girls in San Cristobal, Guatemala - where she lived and worked for more than 17 years. She described her experiences with the Home as the most challenging and most meaningful of her life, and subsequently wrote a book about it which was published in both English and Spanish.

Olga was an avid reader, writer and researcher. She had a wonderful sense of humor and adventurous spirit. In her later years she was famous for cruising around her retirement community at top speed on her scooter. She loved the ocean, playing the
piano and autoharp, baking with her children and grandchildren, and spending time in prayer and study with her faith community. Those that knew her describe her as someone who lived a truly Christ-centered life and has left the world a better place. She will be dearly missed by friends and family.
