Obituary For Martha Owen

Martha (Marny) Wiesner Owen 84 passed away on October 27, 2023, at Haven Hospice Care Center in Lake City, FL. She was born on September 19, 1939, in Superior, WI. Her parents Valerian C. Wiesner and Martha Bingham Wiesner were prominent residents of Superior, owning and operating Bingham Hardware on Tower Ave. until retirement in 1957 and their move to Winter Park, FL. She was predeceased by her parents; brother & sister-law, Maj. James F. Wiesner, USAF (Karen Elmburg).

The Wiesner family has always been avid sports fans and when the Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee, WI in 1953 they became Marny’s favorite team, and continued even after the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966. When she moved to Florida in 1957 – she enjoyed the Atlanta Braves even more – they were closer. She attended many Braves “spring training” games, a few “home” games in Atlanta when possible and watched them on TV any time they were available to see.

Marny is survived by her husband John C. Owen; sons: John B. Owen (Ruth), Thomas K. Owen, Richard K. Owen (Claudine) and James M. Owen (Jane); grandchildren: Caroline Owen, Perry Owen, Garrett Owen and Jackson Owen; nieces: Leslie Wiesner and Melanie Wiesner as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews of the extended family.

Marny was an accomplished violinist and retired after 50 years of playing professionally. Her musical training started in the 1st grade of the Normal School of Superior State Teachers College and she studied privately with Mr. William Keller, a former member of the NY Philharmonic and faculty member of the College. She was a member of the Duluth Symphony, concertmaster of the University Symphony at the U. of F. in Gainesville, FL, and of the Columbus Ga. Community Orchestra. She was a member of the Birmingham Symphony (Alabama) and Jacksonville Symphony (Jacksonville, FL). She was also an active “free-lance” player always in demand for church programs, weddings and chamber music concerts.

Her family took a sabbatical in 1980 and cruised the Caribbean on their sailboat; after which they bought and operated Ortega Yacht Sales in Jacksonville for 16 years. They continued sailing and spent several winters living aboard their yacht INTERLUDE at Man-O-War Cay in the Abacos, Bahamas.

John & Marny retired and moved to Advent Christian Village, a retirement village in Dowling Park, FL. in 2015. The welcoming and friendly village members all became close friends. Marny enjoyed her last years at ACV due to the wonderful Christian attitude she discovered there. With her spiritual gift of hospitality, she easily obeyed the Great Commandment: Love your God and Love your neighbor as yourself. She was loved and continues to influence many, young and old, and will be greatly missed by family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Advent Christian Village, P.O. Box 4305, Dowling Park, FL 32064.
