Obituary For Laurie Lawton Barnett JR

Laurie Lawton Barnett JR, passed away peacefully at his home in O'Brien, Florida surrounded by his 3 remaining children on 12/30/2025. He was 91 years old. Had he made it 2 more days, Laurie would have made 92. But God had other plans for his first
birthday in heaven.

Laurie was son of Lawton Leondanous Barnett Sr. and Clovia Pearl Howell Barnett. Brother to one sister, Annette Barnett Land. He graduated from Branford High School and attended University of Florida until he was drafted in the army where he served honorably hauling fuel from Northern Alaska for the
Korean war.

When Laurie returned home from Alaska he made the decision to buy a boat and go fishing for six months. He then started driving Semi Trucks. He took his retirement at 62, but kept driving part time. During this time he took the opportunity to concentrate more on farming. Hay farming and peddling watermelons were his passion. In Laurie’s later years, when his ability to farm hay had diminished, he put all of his concentration into watermelons, produce, and his cows. You could find Laurie on any of the hottest Florida days out peddling produce well into his late 80's.

Family meant everything to Laurie, and he was known for his strong work ethic, steady presence, and deep love for those closest to him.

Laurie married Virginia Kirby in 1958. Together They had 4 children. Gwendolyn Elaine Barnett Dorsey Virginia Teresa Barnett “TC” Laurie Leondanous Barnett III “Boy” William Laron Barnett “Chico”

Later in life Laurie married Donna Meadows.
They lived together until she passed in 2017.

Laurie is survived by his sister Annette
Land, his children, Gwendolyn Elaine, Virginia Teresa "TC", William Laron "Chico" 6 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Laurie was preceded in death by mother, his father, and his son LL Barnett III "Boy".

There will a service for Laurie Lawton Barnett Jr O'Brien, Florida on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. 22671 95th Drive O'Brien, Florida 32071.

I feel like part of the Barnett clan. TC has been my best friend since we were 6yrs old! They always treated me like I was theirs. I was just telling TC that our Daddy's were the most generous people I've ever known or will know. Never met a stranger and if they could help you in any way they would. They lived and breathed Matthew 25:40 whether purposeful or not. "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." I cannot begin to count the souls that Mr. Laurie opened his home to. He truly was a great man and will be missed beyond measure. Examples to live by.
