John Robertson Sharpe

John Robertson Sharpe lived a full, remarkable, and deeply meaningful life—one defined by service, curiosity, adventure, love, and an unwavering desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

John began working at the age of 13 in his father’s pharmacy. That early experience led him to become a pharmacist, but John wanted to do more. He believed he could make an even greater impact on humanity, and so he pursued medicine, earning his medical license in Richmond, Virginia. He went on to establish a private urology practice in Ocala, Florida, where he cared for countless patients with skill and compassion.

Even after retiring from private practice, John was not ready to stop serving others. He joined Hospice of Marion County as Medical Director, a role he devoted himself to for 27 years. His commitment to hospice reflected the very best of who he was: a physician who understood that caring for people was about far more than medicine. It was about dignity, compassion, presence, and kindness.

John’s greatest joy, however, was found in love. He met his beloved Vicki, whom he called his “whole world,” and they shared 16 wonderful years together. Their love was a beautiful and cherished part of his life.

John had an extraordinary sense of curiosity and adventure. He loved bird watching, flying small planes, hiking, skiing, playing the piano as a self-taught musician, working puzzles and Sudoku, and cheering for his favorite football teams. He traveled extensively, visiting more than 33 countries, as well as the North Pole and Antarctica. China was his favorite destination. He loved meeting new people, experiencing different cultures, and—perhaps most of all—continuing to learn. His mind and heart remained open to the world throughout his life.

John also proudly served two years in the United States Army.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Vicki, and his children: Charles DeWild, DMD, MD; Richard Sharpe and Wendy; Bryan Neumann; Gregory Vincent and Heather; and Candrice Garrett and Matt. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, who will carry his memory and the lessons of his life forward.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon Ray Sharpe and Mary Rosalie, and his brother, James Sharpe.

John was baptized in his teenage years and lived a life of serving Jesus Christ by serving others in his daily life.
John will be remembered not simply for the many things he accomplished, but for the way he lived—with purpose, compassion, curiosity, humor, and love. He touched lives as a pharmacist, physician, hospice leader, husband, father, grandfather, soldier, traveler, teacher, and friend.

His was truly a full and wonderful life. His journey may have come to an end, but the love he gave, the lives he touched, and the memories he created will continue to live on in all who knew him.

John will be laid to rest at Tallahassee National Cemetery.
