Gary Russ, born on July 2, 1955, in Columbia, South Carolina, passed away on June 1, 2024, in Lake City, Florida. He is survived by his beloved son, Adam Russ, born in 1986, and his older sister, Amber Russ. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Russ, his mother, Phyllis Randall, and his older sister, Nancy Russ.

The youngest of three siblings and the only son, Gary was known for his strength and dedication from an early age. He played high school football as an offensive lineman, showcasing his resilience and team spirit. As a seventh-generation member of the family timber business, Russ Timber Corporation, Gary carried on the family legacy with pride.

Seeking to provide a better future for his son, Gary made a significant career transition into the advertising business. He became a Major Accounts Representative for Bellsouth/AT&T’s Yellow Pages directory, where he worked diligently for 17 years.

Gary lived in Savannah, Georgia, and later in Jacksonville, Florida, before returning to Lake City to help care for his ailing mother. His dedication as a loving and faithful son was evident as he supported Phyllis during her final years. Gary’s devotion extended to his role as a father, actively participating in Adam’s upbringing and striving to provide the best life possible for him.

An avid outdoorsman, Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, kayaking, hiking, and gardening. His passion for travel took him from the Appalachian Mountains to the Rockies and around the world, including the Caribbean, Central America, and East Asia.

Gary was a tireless worker and a devoted member of Hopeful Baptist Church. He was actively involved in local Christian charitable organizations and the Hopeful Baptist Men’s Group. His community spirit was further exemplified by his recent efforts in organizing the Columbia High School Class of ’73 50th anniversary reunion.

Gary Russ was affectionately known as “A Mighty Oak” by those who knew him, symbolizing his strength, stability, and enduring presence. His legacy of love, dedication, and hard work will be dearly missed by all.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Hopeful Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 18th at 9:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hopeful Baptist Church or a charity of your choice in Gary’s honor.
