Obituary For Aurist Blanton May, Jr.
Aurist Blanton “Sonny” May, Jr., 93, of Lake City, Florida, went to his heavenly home on August 28, 2025, at Haven Hospice, surrounded by his family.
Born on July 9, 1932, in Newberry, Florida, he was the son of the late Aurist Blanton May, Sr., and Roberta Tate May. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara.
Sonny was a graduate of the University of Florida, earning a degree in Business Administration, and was a proud member of the Florida Gators football team from 1950 to 1953, serving as team captain in 1953.
He is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Florrie Cheatham May, of 73 years; his three children, Terry Wexler (Henry), Mike May (Sandy), and Scott May (Cheryl); four grandchildren, Justin (Joy), Ashley (Brad), Kendell, and Sean; and five great-grandchildren.
Sonny spent 30 years with the W.S. Badcock Corporation, retiring as Vice President of Credit and Finance. He later owned and operated a Badcock Furniture store in Brevard, North Carolina, from 1985 to 2005. With a gift for conversation, Sonny never met a stranger; over the years, he enjoyed boating, camping, fishing, hunting, photography, horses, and model trains. He also dedicated three decades to officiating high school basketball and football with the Lake Region Officials Association, where he served as both a referee and booking agent.
Sonny’s life was centered on his faith in Jesus Christ, his family, and serving others. He will be laid to rest at Forest Grove Cemetery in Alachua, Florida. At his request, no formal service will be held.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Haven Hospice for their compassionate care.
