William Joseph Merrel Patton of Windsor, Florida passed away peacefully on August 18, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was 91.
Merrel was born in Bithlo, Florida on October 10, 1926. He served in the US Navy as a Fireman First Class aboard the USS Gearing from November, 1944 until April, 1946. Upon his return from military service, Merrel married the great love of his life, Marjorie Lorene Hollingsworth Patton on May 5, 1946. Merrel and Lorene lived in Gainesville, Florida and later settled in Windsor, Florida where they raised their five children and watched their grandchildren grow.
Merrel worked as an auto-body mechanic for 45 years primarily with Brasington Cadillac and Miller-Brown Motors in Gainesville, Florida. He retired in 1991 at age 65. As an avid outdoorsman, Merrel enjoyed quail hunting, boating, fishing, camping and spending time with his family.
Merrel was preceded in death by his parents, William Augustus Patton and Iva King Patton; his sister, Lavaughn Patton Wilson and his son-in-law, Marion Eugene O’Quinn.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Lorene Patton; his children: Sharon O’Quinn (Gene), Garron Patton (Linda), Andra Higgins (Ed), Joel Patton (Tina) and Kevin Patton (Tina); his grandchildren: Perry O’Quinn (Heather), Amy O’Quinn Whitworth (Daryl), Cale O’Quinn (Trang), Melissa Steele Eyster (Jay), Lorrinda Patton Aycock (Wes), Garra Patton, Quint Higgins, Brad Higgins (Diana), Lindsey Patton Walker (Dave), Brandon Patton, Rita Smith, David Paul Patton, Thomas Patton and Luke Patton; his great-grandchildren: Chelsey, Marhia, Ariel, MyLinh, Makala, Andrew, Savannah, Morgan, Tyler, Alexander, Clinton, Leah and Joshua; and his great-great grandchildren: James, Leila, Lain and Jackson. Merrel is also survived by his siblings: Almeta Dickerson, Kenneth Patton, Wayne Patton, Gene, Theda and Jeanie.
Our husband, father, brother and grandfather will be greatly missed and remembered fondly for his strong will, unwavering principles, kind heart and devotion to his family. He leaves a great legacy for us all in the strength of character that he has passed on through many generations.
Please join us for a graveside service at 10:00am on Saturday, August 25th at Evergreen Cemetery, 401 SE 21st Avenue, Gainesville, Florida. Following the service, a Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends from 11:30am – 4:00pm at Drury Inn & Suites, 4000 SW 40th Blvd., Gainesville, Florida. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
