Betty Jean Benson (Gwin) was a strong woman, who, along with her husband, David O. Benson Sr., brought together two families to make a home and a future. Jean, as she was known to all, died Nov. 30, 2017.
The families that Jean and David brought together were never the Brady Bunch. We fought. We laughed. We grew together, and grew apart. But through it all, we loved one another.
Jean was a farmer in Michigan and Missouri. She moved with her husband and children every couple of years, also living in South Carolina, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Florida.
After her children left home to start their own lives, Jean worked for NASA, and was part of the Voyager project.
Jean never gave up on her education, loved a sip of wine or bourbon, antiques, as well as collecting whatever attracted her attention.
She was a good mother to her eight children, even when her patience wore thin to snapping.
Jean is predeceased by her husband, David Sr., and one son, Rodney. She is survived by her children: Gary, David, Jerry, Ian, Veda, Roxanne and Sam, as well as her companion, Johnny Barton.
Jean loved The Spirit of Suwannee, and her children remember her singing “Way Down Upon the Suwannee River,” some 50 years ago. Her memorial service is planned at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 12 at the Spirit of the Suwannee Chapel in Live Oaks, Florida.
Following the service, Jean’s ashes will be spread upon the river.
